The Civic Center’s “Blind Date”

Looking for a good laugh, fun night out, and reasonably-priced entertainment?  Well, the folks at Civic Center of Greater Des Moines have just what these cold Iowa nights need right now… a HILARIOUS, quirky, and talented woman, “Mimi” taking us through 90-minutes of a blind date, where you just never know what’s going to happen next!  Playing at the Temple Theater, Blind Date will be pleasing audiences of all ages through January 22nd.  It offers an improvised comedy show where Mimi and one other guest – plucked right from the audience – have everyone laughing and cheering them on as they get to know each other, “fall in love”, and even get into some mishaps along the way.

I have attended this show twice; once on a weekday, when the audience member picked was a divorced 40-year old, and once during the weekend, when the audience member was a married 30-something (who just may have had a couple cocktails prior to his performance).  Both times, the Blind Date performer and her “date” had me, and my group, laughing so hard we cried.  Rebecca Northan, who plays Mimi, must have an incredible judge of character because the guys she “casted” (by mingling in the lobby beforehand) were perfect for the role.  Wednesday’s date was a little more shy and took a bit to open-up, but just watching her talk with him and get him comfortable was entertainment!  She wears a clown nose, has a French accent, and has a wonderful ability to make even deeper topics (on Wednesday, they talked about the recent death of her date’s mother) light-hearted and engaging.

This show is definitely one of Temple Theater’s best comedy acts and earns a great-big “MUST SEE”!  Once you go, you may even find yourself interested in going back… since the show changes every time.  Her “date” greatly influences the direction of the show, along with the audience, who she does talk with as the night goes on, getting feedback on what they’d like to see next.

Chamber members get a 15% discount, as part of the Civic Center Discount Program, so make sure to take advantage of that.  Click here to get started.

New View, New Year

Seriously, still no snow?! My snowboard has seen less white powder this year than Lindsey Lohan in rehab (I was able to board once, analogy still works).  Looking out my office window at (somewhat) green grass makes it even harder to believe it’s the time of year when unused PTO is discovered and office phones at large companies ring endlessly, only to eventually be answered by an “I am out of the office until….” message.  Thousands of young professionals are spending their weekdays lying on couches around the metro in a presumed food comatose from the holidays, still unsure how to react to, or even take advantage of, this unseasonably warm weather.  When I’m done with this blog I plan to write Al Gore to thank him for inventing global warming (and the internet), but I digress.
I didn’t seem to get the memo about taking time off, I tried taking Wednesday off and my business practically imploded (or at least it seemed that way), I’m slightly jealous of everyone sitting at home right now.  I’m also in my office for a very important reason, preparing for 2012 with New View.  I have a lot of new responsibilities as the incoming President of New View; the most important of those is removing work from my to-do list and delegating it to our fantastic team! I know I will be able to trust the general day-to-day operations to our new Vice-President, Lindsey Mathews.  She served New View well in 2011 as the Chair of our Outreach Committee; she has climbed the New View step-stool to the Executive Board for 2012.  In addition to Lindsey, Kristin Cleveland will be joining the Executive Board in the Secretary/Treasurer position.  We will be relying on her polished accounting skills to make sure New View breaks-even this year (at least according to our books).  As our returning Chair of the Communications Committee, Chris Wood will continue slinging all kinds of valuable information at you via Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and our blog.  If you aren’t already following us, head over to wdmnewview.org and pick your favorite method(s).  Sarah Roach is returning as our events coordinator, which fits in well with her day job as a travel coordinator for Travel and Transport.  She was so excited about 2012 she bought a case of 5 hour energy and planned the whole year in one night! Seriously, the whole year is planned, she’s that good! Rounding out the 2012 New View board are our two at-large members, Jay Henrich and Andy Hodges.  We rely on them for keen insight into the happenings of YPs around the metro.  They spend hundreds of hours scouring bars and other popular spots to gather intel for our board.  They do this all on their own free time and at their insistence.
As you can see, we have a ton of talent on our Board and within each of our committees, but we are always looking for more people eager to get involved with New View.  If you have any interest in serving on our board or helping out with any of our committees, please e-mail me (Brad.Phillips@fbfs.com).
Our 2012 “season” starts out on January 5th with a lunch at Embassy Club West.  Dr. Angie Monthei of Complete Wellness and Chiropractic will lead a discussion about “What’s new in Wellness.”  Justin Bogers will also be on hand representing our monthly non-profit group; he will discuss the benefits of Link Associates.  And rumor has it that Carol Chambers with the Business Record may make an appearance to talk about the Metro’s top 40 under 40 campaign/contest they are doing.  All this for 15 bucks! Seriously, if you have been to one of these you know the included buffet provided by Embassy Club is worth at least 16 bucks! This is a good deal, trust me.
I hope to see you at the lunch on January 5th and all the other New View events in 2012!

Healthy Tips to Start Off The New Year

I know many of you make your New Year’s resolution to be healthier or to lose that extra weight gained during the goodie-filled holiday season, or maybe you just want to create more balance in your life.  Most of us try to continue our new year’s resolution(s) all the way through the year, but let’s face it, come mid-February or March, most of us have gone back to our old unhealthy habits. No matter what your new year’s resolutions are; there are some very simple ways to start off your 2012-year on the right foot and keep it that way.

It actually takes 21 days to develop a habit.  And we are habit-forming creatures; this is how we create routines in our daily lives.  Anyone can do something for 21 days if they really want to change.  So try it and stick with it! That habit could be working out, or eating more vegetables, or a daily affirmation or meditation. Be patient, it may take a week or two to start seeing the results you want – 21 days is all it takes.  Keep a calendar on the fridge or something that you look at every day and cross off the days as they pass.

Everyone should have on his or her list of goals for 2012 to become an overall healthier person.  This starts with providing your body with the proper fuel to perform at its optimal levels.  The fuel our bodies crave is vegetables and fruits.  Most people do not eat enough fruits and veggies to meet the nutritional needs the body requires.  A simple start to add fruits and veggies into your diet is to first start to keep a food diary.  Many people are “unconscious eaters” and don’t realize the amount of junk and toxic food they put into our bodies.  We are what we eat, and if we constantly eat junk food or empty calorie foods, our body gets toxic and will cause ailments, aches, pains, digestion issues, and disease.  So write down EVERYTHING you eat (even gum and mints) and keep track of how you feel – maybe you get a headache, or feel tired – it is amazing the correlations you can create when you see them on paper.  Your body will give you warning signs that it does not like certain foods.  After a few days of keeping your food diary, make a point to eat a fresh fruit and/or vegetable with every meal, even your snacks.  This will provide more nutrients your body needs, and if you eat your vegetable or fruit first, you will not eat as much junk after because your body will be more satisfied.  A nutritious diet consists mostly of vegetables, fruit, beans, nuts and seeds.  These foods are nutrient-packed foods that your body will love.

Daily exercise is another important aspect of living a healthy well-balanced life.  You have all heard this before – the key is to find the right exercise that works well for you and fits into your schedule.  Exercise helps to get toxins out of your body and keeps everything moving properly.  It helps decrease stress, increases circulation, improves mental clarity, and increases energy.  So find a 30-90 minute window in your schedule to start moving.  Sometimes the hardest part is putting on those shoes and getting out that door – again, it takes 21 days to develop that habit.

Thinking positive thoughts is also something that often gets overlooked.  The power of what your head can do to create peace or chaos in the body is very influential of how we live our daily life.  If we walk around grumpy all day, we are stressed, we make bad choices, and it creates stress and strain on our entire body.  If we choose to be happy, to pick our battles, and think positive thoughts our body will create more energy and work more efficiently.  Get a little calendar book with daily positive affirmations to read every morning, or look in the mirror every day and tell yourself something positive.  “Every thought we think is creating our future,” Louise L. Hay.

And lastly, something I can’t leave out since it is my passion, get regular chiropractic adjustments.  Our nervous system controls everything our body does.  It controls how we think, how we absorb our nutrients we put into our body, how we move, and how we function.  Our spine houses and protects our nervous system with 24 moveable vertebrae.  If one or several of these vertebrae are out of place causing a misalignment, also called a subluxation, it will cause pressure on the nervous system, decreasing function.  A chiropractor will find these misalignments and take pressure off the nervous system and allow the body to work at optimal levels, increasing overall health and energy.

So let’s start off 2012 right! A habit takes 21 days to develop, so create the positive and healthy habits and get rid of the old ones.  Eat well; keep a food diary and add a fresh fruit and/or vegetable with every single meal.  Move well; find an exercise routine that works well for you.  Think well; start off your day with a positive affirmation.  And finally, get regular chiropractic adjustments so your nervous system is working properly and your body can work at its highest, healthiest levels. Let’s make 2012 your happiest, healthiest year yet!

Passive-aggressive behavior in the Workplace

Have you been to the website, passiveaggressivenotes.com?
If you haven’t, you need to click that link ASAP!
A common issue in the workplace is dealing with passive-aggressive co-workers, subordinates or supervisors.  While that website definitely pokes some fun (which I truly appreciate) at the issue, it is serious enough to cause career train wrecks if you let it.
I won’t pretend I haven’t participated in my share of passive-aggressive behavior in life, which includes work; however, I recognized it and challenged myself to knock it off.  And you know what?  Things at work got better!  I think most of us can be found guilty of doing it at one point or another, what’s important is realizing it before your career suffers because of it…whether you’re the culprit or someone else in your workplace is.
Sometimes, when you work at a desk for 8 hours a day and often with stressful circumstances, it’s hard to get perspective inside your cubicle.  I’ve found that walking the hallways or going outside for a minute always helps.  It can be really vital to your work to make yourself check out for a minute…or 10.
I found the blog post from Iowa State University Human Resources (link below) pretty helpful as well…it points out how you recognize the behavior and then how to deal with it if you’re a co-worker or supervisor of a passive-aggressive person.
I challenge you to read it, identify it in your workplace, and then work toward breaking those bad behaviors before they break you … and/or your career.
